Statement on Westgate Mall Tragedy

Good Afternoon,

I am writing to you following the terrible incident which occurred in Nairobi this weekend at the Westgate shopping mall, which was a complete shock for us all here. Naturally this has affected the Nairobi community and thank you to those of you who have written to us with your thoughts.

With regards to Albatros office, no-one has been affected directly, and nor have any of our clients. Westgate was targeted due to it being highly concentrated with people, many of whom are diplomatic staff and large parts of Kenya remain invisible to terrorists that are seeking sensationalism in the selection of targets. Tourists and national parks are not a target, and clients are therefore not in danger whilst on safari. The hotels which we use in Nairobi are outside of the city centre in the quiet suburbs.

The Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) has amended the travel advice to include details of the incident but has not changed their level of advice on travel to Kenya. His Excellency President Uhuru Kenyatta has increased security across the country and has asked for people to remain calm and vigilant, and has given the Kenya Tourism Board’s assurance that the Government considers the security of tourists and Kenyans alike to be of paramount importance.
Terrorism is an omni present threat throughout the globe and as a result today in Kenya security has been escalated in many parts of the country. The cabinet secretary for commerce and tourism, Mrs Phyllis Kandie reiterated this in a statement released earlier today saying “We wish to assure tourists that Kenya is peaceful and our security agencies are doing everything possible to ensure that everyone is safe. Visitors are thus welcome to visit all our tourist facilities across the country which are operating normally. Tour operators and travel agents have confirmed that tourism activities continue uninterrupted. The government has also scaled up security in other social places across the country.” Please find further details of this statement enclosed.
Our thoughts and prayers are with those involved in this tragic incident as well as their family and friends.
Kind Regards,

Sasha Skeel Taylor
