Grootbos Nature Reserve on Walker Bay

Grootbos Nature Reserve sits above Walker Bay overlooking prime whale watching waters and surrounded by the amazing South African coastal fynbos (floral kingdom). Gazing out over the landscape you can spot such a diverse variety of plans in such a small area. The mountains rise up behind the lodge and the sand dunes and beaches stretch out below. Primary activities include nature walks, 4x4 "flower safaris", horseback riding, beach walks, shark cage diving, whale and marine animal excursions and more. Grootbos offers the Garden Lodge, the original lodge on the property and Forest Lodge, which is newer as it was rebuilt after a wild fire several years ago.

At Forest Lodge the rooms are spacious suites with jaw-dropping views over the sea and fynbos. Details such as wood burning fireplaces, luxury bath amenities, soaking tubs with sea views and natural decor make the lodge blend with its surroundings. Each has a private verandah complete with chaise lounges and a sun umbrella.

The Garden Lodge offers a more traditional lodge experience with rich colors, wood and warm fireplaces. Family suites are the ideal place for parents and kids to experience all that the Reserve has to offer - hikes, beach walks, kids activities, games, feeding the horses and more.

Cuisine receives top marks, guiding was excellent and I'd highly recommend pairing a stay at Grootbos (3 nights is best) with time in Cape Town and on safari.
